The FIA World Council, meeting on Wednesday (29), approved a series of adjustments to technical items in the regulations, especially with regard to power units. In addition, the meeting redefined the format of GP weekends
The FIA (International Automobile Federation) has approved a major change regarding the exchange of power unit parts on a closed park basis in Formula 1. The measure is a result of the numerous engine and reliability problems that the teams face in 2022. The new determination was published after a World Council meeting held on Wednesday (29) in Paris. The meeting also adjusted a number of other items in the technical and sporting regulations, but still did not bring any news about the engine specifications for 2026, as expected.
In any case, according to the entity's statement, teams will now have the chance to drive power unit changes to more up-to-date versions during the closed park period - as long as they are within the season limit. Previously, any changes within the system forced the squad to start from pit-lane in the race. In addition, temporary engine repairs will also be allowed.
Also on engines, the FIA has established that fuel may be cooled to 20ºC in hotter races. The temperature reference will be given one hour before each session. This point has gained the attention of several teams that have suffered from fuel cooling problems in 2022.
The FIA Council took the opportunity and also changed the rules regarding mirrors - the measurements have been updated to allow for greater visibility. It also decided to change the wing deflection tests, and approved new rules for tire testing, especially with regard to the car that will be used for evaluation.
Finally, the meeting ratified the changes to the GP weekend format. The press conferences will now take place within a two-hour window, provided that 23 hours before the first free practice.
