Ferrari deveria priorizar Leclerc, diz Scalabroni

The former Ferrari technical director has called for the team to define a clear front-runner for the championship battle with Max Verstappen.

Enrico Scalabroni, a well-known name in the Formula One paddock who has also worked at Williams and Lotus, disagrees with the current policy of allowing Carlos Sainz to fight for the title against his teammate Charles Leclerc.

"Ferrari needs to have a first and a second driver for the battle with Verstappen," he told . "At this level, with a lot of points to make up, they need to do that. The second driver should be there prioritizing the team."

"It doesn't matter if the name is Leclerc or Sainz. It doesn't concern the driver, it concerns the team. If they want to win as a team, they can't do what Williams did with Nigel Mansell and Nelson Piquet, for example."

Given this, the leading candidate to be Ferrari's first driver is Leclerc - with a longer contract, a higher salary and a clear lead of 37 points in the drivers' championship.

"The most important thing is to race for the team," Scalabroni added. "So I believe the biggest question is which of the two drivers has more points."

"Ferrari is not looking at that now, but they need to make a decision. They should focus on the driver with more points who had fewer problems."
