Richard Verschoor won the Formula 2 race in Austria, having started on slicks. Although the track was drying out during the previous Formula 3 race, the drivers mainly chose to start on rain tires, with a few notable exceptions.
Verschoor, Jehan Daruvala and Roberto Merhi were the drivers furthest ahead betting on slicks, which proved to be completely in their favor over the course of the 40 laps. Marcus Armstrong crashed in turn three on lap two, triggering a Safety Car period until lap five.
On lap seven, the dry track saw Verschoor take the lead, while many of the others realized it was time to stop. Jehan Daruvala stopped second, the first of those on slicks, and managed to hold his position. He was, however, three and a half seconds behind Verschoor just a few laps later.
An incident at turn three between Frederick Vesti and Olli Caldwell was put under investigation by the stewards for Vesti leaving the track and gaining the advantage, with the ART driver later being penalized five seconds.
After Saturday's race included several penalties for track limit violations, it was a relatively uncontroversial race on Sunday before the final laps. Jack Doohan, Calan Williams and Liam Lawson were all given five second penalties for track limit violations.
At the front, Verschoor extended his lead to nearly eight seconds on lap 36, while Merhi was hunting Daruvala. Merhi overtook Daruvala on the final lap, but was given a five-second penalty for exceeding track limits, which would cost him a podium on his return to the series.
Lawson received a ten-second penalty in addition to his previous five-second penalty, while Daruvala regained second place after Merhi's penalty. Verschoor saw the checkered flag first, with Merhi and Daruvala behind.
Verschoor pulled to the side of the track after the checkered flag, saying, "I don't think I can bring it home." Merhi finally finished fifth, promoting Logan Sargeant to the podium. Enzo Fittipaldi was fourth.
Olli Caldwell scored his first point in F2 by finishing tenth. Felipe Drugovich maintains the championship lead, 40 points ahead of Theo Pourchaire.
