Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, Montreal - Canada
Formula 1 crosses the Atlantic for another "street fight" at the Canadian GP, which was not held in 2020 and 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic. The circuit pays tribute to the great Gilles Villeneuve, on the spectacular artificial island of Notre Dame in Montreal. The fact that the track was not purpose-built for racing presents some unique challenges for drivers and teams. The asphalt is a bit more abrasive than in Monaco and Azerbaijan and the tire loads are much more violent. The tires will be hard, medium and soft.

The track is high-speed and the cars exceed 300 km/h on four occasions per lap, and on each occasion they have to brake for a low-speed chicane or corner. These high levels of deceleration put the brakes under enormous stress. There is no other track on the current calendar where the brakes are as demanding as they are here.

Sectors 1 and 2 are unforgiving of driving errors and have corners of different angles on both sides, all with little or no escape area. Sector 3 is almost entirely formed by two straights interspersed by a very technical chicane, with the very close on the way out of it. The track is also a bit slippery - and is even more so because the cars are running with low downforce setups - and undulating. Traction on corner exit, top speed and the brakes are the most important factors. How much of a problem the 2022 cars will have with the pitching is still unknown, as its intensity will also depend on the level of undulations on the track
