Max Verstappen is "cruising" toward his second consecutive drivers' world championship, according to Bernie Ecclestone.
The Briton, who ran Formula One for decades until the Liberty Media era began five years ago, has always said that a competitive Ferrari is crucial to the category's success.
And while the Scuderia will undoubtedly be competitive in 2022 after a period of difficulties, Ecclestone sees signs that Ferrari is returning to old habits.
"The mistakes are appearing again," he told the Swiss newspaper .
"The reliability we are seeing is often reminiscent of the old days, and the drivers themselves are not always confident on the track. That means Max is walking away with six wins already."
Ecclestone insists that he is not pleased to see Ferrari's current situation.
"Like many, I had hoped Ferrari would return to success after more than 14 years," he added, referring to the team's last championship in 2008.
"Unfortunately, I have to say that those who continue to bet their money on Ferrari or (Charles) Leclerc will not win anything."
However, the Monegasque will not give up despite his 49-point disadvantage to the reigning world champion.
"The championship is still in the beginning," Leclerc insisted. "Yes, the disadvantage is 49 points, but it's two wins - that's all!"
"Seriously, we just have to keep focusing on ourselves. So I'm not worried, but extremely motivated to finally have a clean weekend to show that we are still in contention and are strong."
