With Nicholas Latifi's place at Williams in doubt for 2023, it was notable de Vries made his debut in an official Formula 1 weekend for the team in Friday practice in Barcelona.
As for the possibility of this leading to a starting spot, he admitted to the Dutch publication : "I have no control over that."
However, when asked if he is close to a crossroads between his dreams for the future and a more realistic view of what will happen, de Vries admitted : "You could look at it that way.
"On the other hand, I also want to be realistic, to focus on the present and what I know. You can't build a career and a future on hope. But I think I am in a good situation in terms of my ability and my options for the future."
