Covid rules could hinder GP in South Africa

Current covid restrictions may hinder South Africa's aspirations to host a Formula 1 race.

Recently, the possibility of Kyalami returning to the annual calendar has increased - especially after F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali's visit in June.

"For sure, it is another area that so far is missing in the geography of our calendar," said the Italian.

However, Anton Roux, president of Motorsport South Africa, says that one obstacle to any concrete agreement with F1 are the measures aimed at controlling covid-19.

For example, the circuit is still limited to 50 percent of its maximum attendance.

"Looking at Texas, they had 380,000 spectators," he told the African Channel . "I think it's more than the Olympics and 60% of those spectators were foreigners. I don't necessarily think we will attract that many spectators, but we could have between 250,000 and 300,000."

"South Africa is a long distance trip, so the flow of tourists will be important. And I think the covid restrictions are a big challenge. Being able to accommodate only 50% of the spectators could put the whole event at risk."

"We had an international event this year where 2000 spectators were allowed, but we had 1800 staff on the circuit," Roux added. "My point is that it simply doesn't make sense if you can't reach your maximum capacity."

In any case, Roux said Kyalami is working on renovations to bring the circuit up to FIA standards for F1, adding that if the event cannot take place in 2023, he is "sure" it will be in 2024.
