Ferrari boss Mattia Binotto revealed what he said to Charles Leclerc after the Monegasque's dramatic crash at the French GP.
Leclerc led the first part of the race before losing the rear end of his car and hitting the barriers. Up to that point, Binotto feels that the performance had been good overall.
"I think we had a good performance with the tire management," Binotto stated after the race.
"I think we had a bit of an advantage over Red Bull again because, after 15 laps, Charles was going well and gaining three tenths a lap on Max - who had to stop quite early, while we certainly would have extended the stint."
About what happened with Leclerc, Binotto admits that it was a driving mistake, but he insists that he tried to encourage his driver with some positive words.
"It was a small mistake. That happens," the Italian explained. "What I told Charles is that our life got a little more difficult, but I think it will get better. We will have more fun in the future."
Leclerc complained about his gas pedal in his first radio message after the crash, but Binotto says the sole cause of the incident was a driving error.
"It was a genuine piloting error," he added. "His comment about the throttle was because he engaged reverse and tried to get out of the barriers."
"Without going into the details, somehow he felt that the engine torque was not reacting to the throttle, but it had nothing to do with the error."
