Ferrari boss Mattia Binotto says his goal is not the 2022 world championship, but to take a step toward continued success.
Before this season, the Italian set the challenge of turning Ferrari into a competitive team that is always in contention for wins.
However, he has not set for the Scuderia the goal of winning the title in 2022 and thinks it would be "wrong" to change the team's ambitions now.
"We have set the goal of being competitive again in 2022," Binotto told . "So that is our goal, not to win the championship, and it would be completely wrong to turn that into 'let's try to win the title because we are very competitive.
"Being competitive is one thing; becoming world champion is another level of task. Maybe I'm saying this to relieve some of the pressure on the team, but I also think it would be a management mistake to change the goals that we have set."
However, the long-term goal is and always will be to create a world championship winning streak for Ferrari over an extended period of time.
"I believe it will take time," Binotto admitted. "Our internal mentality is that we still need to improve as a team to be able to win a championship."
"That doesn't mean that we won't make it. Maybe it will happen sooner than expected, but we are aware of the fact that it is more than just being competitive."
For now, with everything already underway in his long-term plan, Binotto is willing to face the 2022 season race by race, without worrying too much about the points because finishing at the top is not the team's goal.
"The ambition is there," he added. "Each person working at Ferrari has that ambition, I believe I don't need to remind them.
"The most important thing is to let them focus on the process of continuous improvement so that every race is an opportunity to learn lessons and build something better. And it is vital to keep the focus on each race. We are not looking at the score."
