AlphaTauri boss Franz Tost recalled Mick Schumacher's success in the lower Formula 1 categories to argue that the German cannot be "discarded" after a string of accidents
The start of Mick Schumacher's second season in Formula One has not been easy for the German driver. The Haas star has been involved in a few incidents so far this year, with heavy and troubling crashes in Saudi Arabia and Monaco, and another - of lesser intensity - in Miami. So far, the German has completely destroyed two cars of the American team. Still, he received praise and a request for more time from AlphaTauri boss Franz Tost.
"You shouldn't discard Mick [Schumacher] so quickly," Tost opined in an interview with the F1-Insider portal. "I still believe in him. You can't forget that Mick won Formula 3 and Formula 2, it doesn't just happen by accident," the AlphaTauri boss pointed out.

So far, Schumacher is one of only two drivers - the other is Nicholas Latifi - to have failed to score points in 2022. After a debut year in which he overcame former teammate Nikita Mazepin without much difficulty, Mick has not been able to repeat the performance against Kevin Magnussen, who returned to F1 this year - and precisely at a time when the Haas car presents the possibility of scoring points.
"Maybe, Mick just needs a little more time," Tost assessed. "He should get that. It's only his second season in Formula One and we have completely new cars that are difficult to drive," he pointed out.
Another one to comment on Schumacher's current stage of learning was Mercedes' former vice-president of motorsport, Norbert Haug - who worked directly with Michael Schumacher, Mick's father, at the beginning of the seven-time champion's time with the German team.
"He simply tries to extract everything out of the car," he commented. "If you turn a few centimeters before, it can have disastrous consequences. However, the team must continue to support him now. If he can untie the knot in his system, he will be able to score points," he finished.
