Alonso leads TL3 in the rain in Canada

Alpine's Fernando Alonso set the fastest time during the final free practice session for the rain-hit Formula One Canadian Grand Prix. Conditions remained dreary and wet throughout the hour-long session after steady rain during the morning, along with temperatures around 12°C.

The drivers used heavy rain tires for most of the session before switching to intermediates for the final 15 minutes. Alonso set a time of 1min33s836s to finish 0s053 behind AlphaTauri's Pierre Gasly, with Sebastian Vettel third for Aston Martin.

Esteban Ocon was fourth for Alpine, ahead of the McLaren duo of Daniel Ricciardo and Lando Norris. Sergio Perez was the fastest of the usual favorites in eighth position.

Max Verstappen was a discrete ninth and had several off-track excursions during the session. The Red Bull driver widened at turn 10, ran through the grass at the turn 4 chicane and spun at turn 2, although he avoided damage on all occasions.

Ferrari's Carlos Sainz finished at the bottom of the top 10, while teammate Charles Leclerc completed only five installation laps and did not set a time.

Mercedes finished with George Russell in seventh and Lewis Hamilton in 15th. Qualifying practice starts at 5 p.m., with Band/Bandsports broadcast.
