Fernando Alonso was punished with five seconds for changing position more than once when defending himself against Valtteri Bottas and lost two places in the Canadian GP
Fernando Alonso was punished with five seconds for his defense moves at the end of the Canadian GP held on Sunday (19). The Alpine Spaniard changed positions more than once to defend himself against Valtteri Bottas' Alfa Romeo on the penultimate lap of the race, with the Finn having to take his foot off the gas between turns 10 and 12 to avoid contact between the two cars.
With the punishment, Alonso dropped from seventh to ninth place, taking only two points instead of six. Bottas and his teammate, Guanyu Zhou, gained one position each, adding ten important points for the Italian team.
This was not the first time this season that Fernando received a punishment after a stage that took important points away from him. The Prince of Asturias was punished with five seconds after the Miami GP for cutting way, losing a ninth place that would have given him two more points.
After starting on the front row, the Spaniard suffered from engine problems and came away with a result that was not what he had hoped for. Now Alonso has 18 points and occupies 10th place in the Drivers' World Championship. Formula One returns on July 3 for the British GP at Silverstone.
