Alonso is punished and drops to ninth in the Canadian GP

Fernando Alonso received a five-second penalty for changing direction more than once while defending, dropping to ninth in the Canadian Grand Prix.

Alonso was found to have committed the infraction while trying to hold off Valtteri Bottas on the straight before the final chicane at the end of the race in Montreal.

The Alpine driver was seen making small movements to the left and right, which prevented the Alfa Romeo rival from overtaking - although Bottas himself was investigated for changing direction while attacking.

Alonso was summoned by the stewards to explain his actions, but the penalty imposed drops him from seventh to ninth.

The commissioners' verdict stated, "Between turns 10 and 12 on the penultimate lap of the race, car 14 made repeated changes of direction to defend against car 77, which had to take its foot off at a certain point and briefly lost speed."

"While taking into account the driver's argument that car 77 was not alongside car 14 at any time, the commissioners consider this a clear violation of the relevant regulations."

"Therefore, the commissioners impose a time penalty of five seconds, in line with that imposed for a similar incident at Australia 2022."
