Alonso derides FIA, but celebrates "great result" with fifth place in England

Fernando Alonso made it clear that he wanted to see Charles Leclerc punished for fighting with Lewis Hamilton, but overall enjoyed the race at Silverstone

If a day was zero in the 2022 Formula One World Championship season, it is hard to remember. Fernando Alonso came fifth in the British GP this Sunday (3) and left excited with the final result. He still found time to mock the FIA commissioners.

Alonso referred to Charles Leclerc's movements during the fight for position with Lewis Hamilton, just in front of him. Fernando said that the Monegasque should have been punished, as he himself was after moving once in a fight in Canada. The reality, however, is that the commissioners pointed out five changes of direction by Alonso on that occasion.

In any case, Alonso liked his fifth place. He even thought that the duels of the top four would yield some more space, but it didn't happen.

"I was watching the fight for the first positions and they were really loose. I thought they would touch and at least two would get out of my way, but despite the tough fight, they ran with respect," he said.

"The fifth place is a great result for us. It could be fourth place, because Charles moved from position three times while defending against Lewis. I moved just once in Canada and got punished, which means it's not legal to do that," he ironized.

"We are fourth in the Constructors' World Cup [actually fifth] and getting closer and closer to McLaren. Red Bull, Ferrari and Mercedes are too far behind," he finished.

The 2022 Formula One season returns next week at Paul Ricard for the French GP on July 8-11.
