Hinwil's team changed the engine, turbo, MGU-H, MGU-K and electronic controls of the Finn's car. Punishment will be applied for Sunday's race, not the sprint race
Alfa Romeo opted to change the engine of Valtteri Bottas' car on Friday (8), on the first day of Formula 1 action in Austria. As a result, the former Mercedes driver will start from the last position on the grid on Sunday, in 20th.
Even in a weekend with a changed format, with a sprint race, the Finn's punishment applies for Sunday's race, after Saturday's shortened race. Bottas was punished because this will be the fourth different engine to be used in the 2022 F1 season, more than the limit of what is allowed - the regulation foresees the use (without punishment) of only three power units throughout the year.
This time, the Finn will have a new internal combustion engine, turbo, MGU-H (battery responsible for generating electric power from the heat of the exhaust pipe), and a new power unit. This time the Finn will have a new internal combustion engine, turbo, MGU-H (battery responsible for generating electrical energy from the heat of the cars exhaust), MGU-K (responsible for producing kinetic energy) and a third different configuration of electronic controls.
Unlike the other components, which can be changed three times without punishment (and Bottas reaches the fourth part in each), the latter can only be replaced once within the rule - and this is Alfa Romeo's second change.
With this, the Finn has accumulated more than 15 positions in punishments - by the regulations, this automatically becomes a start from the bottom of the grid.
