Alexander Albon talked about the future and expressed his desire to stay in Formula 1 after the end of his contract with Williams, although he stresses that he is currently focused only on fighting for more points in the 2022 season
Even with a bad car, it is safe to say that Alexander Albon has already had some shining moments in the 2022 Formula 1 season. The Thai Williams driver's first achievement was the point he earned at the Australian GP after a bold strategy, delaying his pit-stop and staying on track until the penultimate lap. Then he managed to finish in the scoring zone again in Miami, and also counted on a punishment given to Fernando Alonso to officially close ninth.
With a contract signed for two seasons - 2022 and 2023 -, Albon gave an interview to the website Crash.net saying he is focused on staying longer in the category, but has been looking to take one step at a time in his work with the base in Grove.
"From my side, I only see things in the short term," Albon said. "I really focus only on the present time, and now I see myself as a Williams driver. My job is to get the most out of the car and develop it in the best way possible so that we can fight for points more regularly and move up in the championship," he continued.
"That's how I see it. My focus is to do the best job possible. I feel that this year has so far been better than I expected. I hope to keep improving as the chemistry between me and the team gets stronger and stronger," added the driver.
With the driver market for 2023 defining itself week by week, Albon was asked about his future with Williams after the end of his contract and stressed that he "wants to stay." "I believe everything is going very well and I want to stay, that's my goal. The season has started very well. As a team, we weren't where we wanted to be, but we made the most of opportunities to score points when it didn't seem possible," he stressed.
After being demoted at Red Bull, staying in the reserves last year, the contract with Williams brought in Albon a sense of "redemption," in the Thai's words. "I want to prove to people what I can do. Of course it's still early in the season, but so far, we are doing very well. I definitely have nothing to complain about."
Next, the #23 talked about the maturation process that the year away from the grid has provided, saying he feels "much more confident in driving" and in "connecting with Williams." "It feels like we are in the right place at the right time. I feel that I have matured and gained experience and that I am a better driver than before," he finished.
